Top Tips on Container Transport for Beginners

Container transport is a little different to other types of haulage and that’s why you need a specialist haulier to handle it.  Container hauliers will work with you to make sure the transport goes smoothly but here are a few of the basics you should know beforehand.

Container Transport for Beginners

Preparing to receive the container

The first thing to do is to make sure you are ready to receive the container when it is delivered.  Most general haulage companies will chat with you about what specifics you want when you make the booking, so it is worth preparing for it.

The most important thing to consider is access to the location where the container will be placed.  Container hauliers will say that you need space for the truck without moving bushes or shrubs or having them damage the vehicle.  You also need at least one-metre clearance from power lines if the transport and haulage service uses a crane to lift the container from the vehicle.

Solid ground is also required to place the container on.  You don’t want an area where the ground is too sandy or clay texture because the haulage truck could get stuck and the container itself may not stay upright.

Finally, decide which direction you want the container to face – all transport companies will ask this because it is important to know before loading and during unloading.

Types of delivery

There are also a few different types of vehicles that are used for general haulage and for container delivery.  There’s no right or wrong option but the company will select the vehicle that best suits your needs and the delivery location.

Tilt tray trucks

Tilt tray trucks are often used if there is lots of room in front of where the container will be located.  With these, the tray of the truck lifts and lets the container slowly slide backwards to the ground.  The truck then drives forward very slowly, lowering the container the rest of the way until it is clear.

Side loading trucks

Side loading trucks tend to be used where there is less space at the front or rear of the space and the container is slid into place with a side lifter.  This is often used when the container will be stored off the ground or even on top of other containers.

Hiab delivery

The third option is the Hiab delivery that is used when other types of delivery are unavailable due to the location.  It is also ideal if you need the container to be lifted over obstacles such as fences or onto raised platforms.  Trucks can load containers to the side or rear but do require a greater height clearance due to the crane equipment.

Work with an expert

Container transport is a common enough thing, but you still want to work with an expert to ensure yours is delivered safely and on time.  They will help you check your requirements and the site requirements to ensure your container arrives and can be put into place easily and efficiently.
